Although the Philippines may be one of several Asian countries not represented in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, we Filipinos can still take pride on several of our countrymen who took part in the games and its other important events. First on the list are the four Filipino-Canadians who took part in the Olympic Torch Relay prior to the official opening of the games last February12. The flame of the Olympic Torch was lit in Olympia on October 22, 2009. It then traveled from Greece, over the North Pole to Canada’s High Arctic and on to the West Coast and Vancouver. The relay started its long Canada journey from the British Columbia capital of Victoria. Celebrity torchbearers included Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Nash, Matt Lauer, Justin Morneau, Michael Buble, Bob Costas, Shania Twain, and hockey greats Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky, and the captains of the two Vancouver Canucks teams that went to the Stanley Cup Finals: Trevor Linden (1994) and Stan Smyl (1982). The four Filipino Canadians torchbearers were Lani Miro, Richer Guinto, Macoy Lagadi and Noel Oco.
